Throughout August, US aircraft and their crews would continue to arrive at Guadalcanal to beat back the enemy, and air battles between the Allied aircraft at Henderson airfield and Japanese bombers and fighters from Rabaul in New Guinea, continued daily. While the Japanese Commander defending the island ordered his troops to “rout and annihilate the enemy” the battles through the dense and disease-ridden jungles of Guadalcanal, would be some of the worst the American GIs would encounter during the Second World War.
